Torvill and Dean originally opened the centre in 1984. However, the facility had become outdated by the 2010s and could no longer meet demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A \u00a330 million redevelopment programme replaced the existing facility. The new centre reopened in 2023 with two Olympic-sized ice rinks. Its redesigned exterior included a facade clad with copper shingles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">High insulation levels within the building created an unexpected winter safety issue. The copper shingles remained close to the surrounding ambient temperature. Therefore, snow and ice could accumulate across the facade during cold weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accumulated snow and ice could then slide from the copper shingles. Public walkways and the centre\u2019s entrance were located below the affected areas. As a result, falling ice presented a significant risk to visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project required an energy-efficient and fully automated solution. It needed to prevent snow and ice from building up on the facade. In addition, the system had to operate without manual intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heatcom worked closely with the client to identify the affected facade areas. The team then mapped the locations where snow and ice created the greatest risk. This information guided the design of a bespoke trace heating system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Installers mounted the Ex-rated trace heating cables behind the copper shingles. The restricted space required an extremely thin system. Heatcom also specified fire-rated insulation to meet the project\u2019s safety requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stainless steel fixings were designed specifically for the building\u2019s structure. The installation also used proprietary roof fixings and specialist adhesives. Together, these components secured the heating system behind the copper panels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The design avoided electrical connections within inaccessible areas behind the facade. Therefore, future maintenance would not require access to concealed cable connections. This was important because the copper panels would restrict access after completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heatcom supplied roof-mounted moisture and temperature sensors. These sensors were connected to advanced ice and snow melting controllers. The controls monitored weather conditions without requiring manual input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the sensors detected relevant winter conditions, the controls activated the heating. The system then raised the temperature behind the copper shingles. Once heating was no longer required, the automatic controls switched the system off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This automatic operation supported an energy-efficient <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heatcom.dk\/de\/produktkategorien\/frostschutz\/\">frost protection system<\/a>. The heating only operated when the monitored conditions required it. Therefore, the facade did not need continuous heating throughout winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buckingham Group Contracting installed the system during 2023. Heatcom supplied the equipment through a London-based electrical wholesaler. The completed installation combined bespoke cables, specialist fixings and automatic monitoring equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Result<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heatcom commissioned the system in 2023. Testing confirmed that it raised the copper facade temperature by up to 25\u00b0C above ambient. This increase prevented snow and ice from remaining on the heated areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lee Valley facade heating faced several weeks of sub-zero conditions during winter 2023 and 2024. Throughout this period, the system performed flawlessly. The copper facade remained completely free from accumulated snow and ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consequently, falling ice no longer presented the same risk above the public entrance. Visitors could access the centre safely during the freezing conditions. The automated controls achieved this result without requiring manual operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The finished system met the project\u2019s restricted installation space and safety requirements. It also provided automatic protection for the copper-clad facade.
