Project/Case: Domestic Underfloor Heating System for Property Extension

At Hurston Mill, a period property in rural West Sussex, homeowners Mr. and Mrs. Whitbread were extending their home to include a new dining room and wet room.
Because the property is located off the mains gas network, traditional wet heating systems were not an option. The homeowners wanted an energy-efficient electric underfloor heating system that could act as the sole source of heating, while keeping the design of the extension clean and free from radiators or wall-mounted units.
It was also essential that the installation process caused minimal disruption to the ongoing building work and did not increase the overall floor height.
Through our subsidiary Heatmat, Heatcom Group designed and supplied a dual underfloor heating system tailored to the unique requirements of the extension.
For the dining room, Heatmat specified a 6 mm Red In-screed heating cable laid directly onto reinforcement fabric, providing steady and consistent warmth through the screed bed. This solution acts as the main heat source while maintaining an even floor temperature.
In the wet room, 200 W/m² heating mats were installed over 10 mm insulation boards for a faster heat-up time and improved energy efficiency. Both systems are managed by NGT programmable thermostat timers, offering precise temperature control and clear energy-use feedback in pounds and pence.
The combination of low build height, smart controls, and high thermal efficiency made the system ideal for this off-gas property.
The installation was completed efficiently by Arun Builders, with Heatmat’s technical team providing guidance on-site. Both the dining room and wet room systems were installed in under half a day.
The homeowners immediately noticed the difference — the dining room now provides consistent warmth, while the wet room reaches a comfortable floor temperature in under 30 minutes.
