The steep concrete ramp leading into the reception area had to remain accessible <strong>365 days a year<\/strong> to maintain operational efficiency and safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sir Robert McAlpine<\/strong>, acting as the main contractor, approached Heatmat (part of the <strong>Heatcom Group<\/strong>) to supply and oversee the installation of a durable, fully automated ramp heating system capable of operating in sub-zero conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Solution<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through our subsidiary <strong>Heatmat<\/strong>, Heatcom Group supplied and commissioned a <strong>high-output 7 mm in-screed cable system<\/strong> engineered for industrial ramp heating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>loose cable configuration<\/strong> was selected over pre-formed mats to allow flexible spacing and variable heat distribution across the ramp, ensuring optimal performance where the incline was steepest. The system delivered an impressive <strong>270 W\/m\u00b2 output<\/strong>, capable of melting ice and snow efficiently even in severe weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of the ramp\u2019s gradient and thermal output, there was <strong>no need to heat the drainage channels<\/strong>, as the meltwater itself stayed warm enough to remain ice-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For control, the system was equipped with a <strong>fully automated thermostat and timer<\/strong>, linked to <strong>ground-level temperature and moisture sensors<\/strong>. These intelligent sensors activated the system only when icy conditions were detected and shut it down once the ramp was clear \u2014 guaranteeing <strong>energy-efficient operation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Projected running costs were kept extremely low, at under <strong>\u00a3150 per year in a cold winter<\/strong>, while maintaining full accessibility and safety throughout the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Result<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once calibrated to local conditions, the system operated flawlessly.
