Wall Heating System for Little Kelham, Sheffield

Little Kelham Wall Heating System

Location: Sheffield, South Yorkshire, UK

Project/Case: Low-Carbon Residential Development – Wall Heating System

Year: 2015

The Goal

Little Kelham is a flagship low-carbon housing development in Sheffield, created by sustainable developers CITU on a former steelworks site. The scheme includes 153 super-insulated Passivhaus-style homes, built with airtight timber-frame construction and supported by solar PV for an EPC A rating.

Because these homes have very low heat demand, a conventional radiator system wasn’t suitable. CITU needed a modern, discreet, low-output heating solution that supported flexible interior design and worked within internal stud walls — allowing homeowners the freedom to choose any floor finish without compromising heating performance.

Our Solution

Through our subsidiary Heatmat, Heatcom Group collaborated with CITU and low-energy design specialists LEDA to develop a tailored electric wall heating system for selected homes across the development.

The engineering process included:

  • Full room-by-room heat-loss calculations
  • On-site testing using a physical mock-up built by Heatmat’s project manager
  • Scenario comparison to confirm output suitability for low-energy buildings

Based on the design analysis, a combination of 160 W and 200 W wall heating mats was selected. These mats were mounted onto board, fixed with tile adhesive, and plastered over to create a seamless heating surface within the internal walls of bedrooms, living rooms and hallways.

The system is controlled by manual TPS thermostats, which monitor air temperature and switch the heating on or off as required.

This installation approach also ensured that heating integrated perfectly with CITU’s smart home platform, where residents can manage their homes remotely via the Actuate app — including a “Home & Away” mode that powers down non-essential systems with a single tap.

The Result

The wall heating system provides a responsive, discreet and energy-efficient heat source ideal for Little Kelham’s ultra-low-energy design.

According to LEDA and CITU, the system outperformed radiator-based concepts and fitted the project’s sustainability and smart-home goals.

This flagship scheme has since paved the way for a much larger 312-home low-carbon development in Leeds, using the same design principles.
