Dobcross Driveway Heating for Safer Winter Access

The Goal

Dobcross driveway heating was required for a private home near Oldham in Greater Manchester. The homeowner needed reliable protection against snow, ice and freezing winter conditions. Without heating, vehicles could lose grip on the property’s steep driveway.

The driveway leads directly onto the busy A62 road towards Huddersfield. Therefore, any uncontrolled slide could create a serious safety risk. Snowfall and black ice also made leaving the property difficult.

The homeowner had struggled with winter access for several years. Vehicles had become stuck on the driveway on numerous occasions. As a result, the homeowner contacted Heatmat, part of Heatcom Group, for a reliable solution.

The 2014 project needed to improve tyre grip where vehicles travelled across the sloping surface. In addition, the homeowner wanted efficient and automatic control.

Our Solution

Heatcom Group supplied the system through its subsidiary Heatmat. The installation used 7 mm exterior cables designed for ice and snow melting. Installers arranged the cables within two heated tyre tracks along the driveway’s edges.

This layout placed heat directly beneath the vehicle’s tyres. Therefore, the system targeted the areas where additional grip was required. The two tracks created a clear heated route along the steep driveway.

Installers secured the cables to reinforced construction mesh with robust cable ties. This kept the cable layout in place during the next installation stages. The cables were then covered with sand and finished with decorative paving blocks.

Automatic controls formed an important part of the design. Heatmat paired the cables with a ground moisture sensor and a 47 Amp thermostat. The thermostat allowed fully programmable operation.

The controls activate the heating only when ice or snow is detected. Consequently, the homeowner does not need to start the system manually. The controls also ensure the heating operates only when winter conditions require it.

The project demonstrates a targeted application of snow and ice melting. Instead of heating the whole driveway, the system focuses on two tyre tracks. This approach addressed the specific access problem described by the homeowner.

The Result

The Dobcross driveway heating installation transformed access during freezing weather. The heated tracks now keep the vehicle route free from snow and ice. As a result, the homeowner can use the steep driveway more safely during winter.

Automatic operation also provides reassurance when black ice affects the area. The controls respond when ice or snow is detected. Therefore, safer access does not depend on manual activation.

The homeowner described having “a few hairy moments” with black ice. They had also become stuck on the driveway numerous times. After installation, the homeowner confirmed, “Now I can get out safely every time.”

The completed system combines targeted heating with automatic control. It provides reliable winter access while preserving the driveway’s decorative paved finish.
