industrial ramp heating system Greatmoor waste facility

Ramp Heating for Residual Waste Facility

Ramp Heating for Residual Waste Facility

Location: Greatmoor, Buckinghamshire, UK

Project/Case: Greatmoor Energy-from-Waste Facility Ramp Heating

Year: 2015

The Goal

At the Greatmoor Energy-from-Waste facility in Buckinghamshire, a reliable ramp heating system was needed to ensure all-weather access for heavy refuse trucks delivering waste to the processing hall.

Buckinghamshire County Council commissioned the facility, and FCC Environment manages it. The site processes 300,000 tonnes of residual waste per year, converting it into electricity and hot water. The steep concrete ramp leading into the reception area had to remain accessible 365 days a year to maintain operational efficiency and safety.

Sir Robert McAlpine, acting as the main contractor, approached Heatmat, part of the Heatcom Group. They needed a durable, fully automated industrial ramp heating system capable of operating in sub-zero conditions.

Our Solution

Through its subsidiary Heatmat, Heatcom Group supplied and commissioned a high-output 7 mm in-screed cable system engineered for industrial ramp heating.

The team selected a loose cable configuration over pre-formed mats. This allowed flexible spacing and variable heat distribution across the ramp, ensuring optimal performance where the incline was steepest. The system delivered an impressive 270 W/m² output, capable of melting ice and snow efficiently even in severe weather.

Because of the ramp’s gradient and thermal output, the drainage channels did not need heating. The meltwater itself stayed warm enough to remain ice-free.

For control, the system uses a fully automated thermostat and timer linked to ground-level temperature and moisture sensors. These intelligent sensors activate the system only when icy conditions are detected and shut it down once the ramp is clear. As a result, the system guarantees energy-efficient operation. Projected running costs were kept extremely low, at under £150 per year in a cold winter, while maintaining full accessibility and safety throughout the season.

The Result

Once calibrated to local conditions, the system operated flawlessly. The ramp now remains clear of snow and ice year-round. Therefore, vehicles can safely access the facility without delay.

This installation showcases Heatcom Group’s ability, through Heatmat, to design and deliver robust, automated heating systems for heavy-duty industrial applications, combining safety, reliability and energy efficiency in one solution.
