Project/Case: Greatmoor Energy-from-Waste Facility Ramp Heating
Year: 2015
At the Greatmoor Energy-from-Waste facility in Buckinghamshire, a reliable ramp heating system was required to ensure all-weather access for heavy refuse trucks delivering waste to the processing hall.
Commissioned by Buckinghamshire County Council and managed by FCC Environment, the facility processes 300,000 tonnes of residual waste per year, converting it into electricity and hot water. The steep concrete ramp leading into the reception area had to remain accessible 365 days a year to maintain operational efficiency and safety.
Sir Robert McAlpine, acting as the main contractor, approached Heatmat (part of the Heatcom Group) to supply and oversee the installation of a durable, fully automated ramp heating system capable of operating in sub-zero conditions.
Through our subsidiary Heatmat, Heatcom Group supplied and commissioned a high-output 7 mm in-screed cable system engineered for industrial ramp heating.
A loose cable configuration was selected over pre-formed mats to allow flexible spacing and variable heat distribution across the ramp, ensuring optimal performance where the incline was steepest. The system delivered an impressive 270 W/m² output, capable of melting ice and snow efficiently even in severe weather.
Because of the ramp’s gradient and thermal output, there was no need to heat the drainage channels, as the meltwater itself stayed warm enough to remain ice-free.
For control, the system was equipped with a fully automated thermostat and timer, linked to ground-level temperature and moisture sensors. These intelligent sensors activated the system only when icy conditions were detected and shut it down once the ramp was clear — guaranteeing energy-efficient operation.
Projected running costs were kept extremely low, at under £150 per year in a cold winter, while maintaining full accessibility and safety throughout the season.
Once calibrated to local conditions, the system operated flawlessly. The ramp now remains clear of snow and ice year-round, ensuring that vehicles can safely access the facility without delay.
This installation showcases Heatcom Group’s ability, through Heatmat, to design and deliver robust, automated heating systems for heavy-duty industrial applications — combining safety, reliability, and energy efficiency in one solution.
