Underfloor and Driveway Heating at Bilton Hall

The Goal

The Bilton Hall heating project involved a Grade II* listed manor house in Wetherby, Yorkshire. The project covered both indoor underfloor heating and an external driveway system.

The site manager contacted the heating team after working with them on a previous high-end project. At Bilton Hall, underfloor heating was required across most of the property’s 22 rooms.

Some main living spaces included a large rug area surrounded by wooden flooring. These spaces required two individually controlled heating systems.

The project also required a heated driveway. All systems needed to perform as intended while meeting the strict criteria for a heritage property.

Our Solution

The team specified the required underfloor heating systems and the heated driveway system.

In selected living spaces, one heating system was fitted beneath the large rug area. A second system served the surrounding wooden floor. Each system had its own controls.

The project required multiple site visits and planning meetings. These involved the main contractor, subcontractors, site manager and flooring specialist.

An English Heritage representative also participated because of the property’s Grade II* listed status. The different parties worked together to review the heating, flooring and heritage requirements.

This coordination aimed to ensure that each system would perform correctly. It also ensured that the specification considered the strict requirements applying to the listed property.

The electric underfloor heating formed the indoor part of the project. The heated driveway was specified as a separate external system.

The Result

The Bilton Hall heating project was completed in 2022. Its final scope included underfloor heating across most of the 22 rooms and a heated driveway.

Selected living spaces received separate systems beneath the rug areas and surrounding wooden floors. Individual controls allowed the two areas to be managed separately.

The specification process included contractors, the flooring specialist and an English Heritage representative. Therefore, the heating requirements were considered alongside the floor layouts and listed-building criteria.
